The Gender Is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) Network is set to host the 41st Pre-Summit Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Consultative Meeting on Gender Mainstreaming in the African Union (AU) and Member States from 6 to 9 February 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This pivotal meeting will be held under the theme, “Advancing Justice and Reparations for African Women and Girls,” aligned with the AU’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
Reparatory justice remains a cornerstone of addressing historical injustices that have disproportionately impacted women and girls of African descent. Building on the momentum of the Accra Conference on Reparations (2023) and the adoption of the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034), this meeting will integrate reparations with gender equality and sustainable development initiatives.
The four-day event will bring together diverse stakeholders, including representatives from civil society, African Union bodies, international organizations, and grassroots movements, to discuss critical issues affecting African women and girls. Participants will focus on advancing reparations as a means to address systemic inequalities and historical injustices stemming from slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and systemic discrimination.
Highlights of the Event Include:
● GIMAC Young Women Advocacy Training (6 February 2025): Empowering young women with skills and knowledge to become effective advocates.
● 41st GIMAC CSO Pre-Summit Meeting (7-8 February 2025): A two-day platform to strategize on advancing a gender-sensitive reparations agenda.
● Special Meetings (9 February 2025): Including dialogues on inclusive peace in Sudan through women’s leadership and consultations with Sudanese women peace activists.
The meeting will also emphasize key African Union initiatives such as 1Million Next, the Women and Youth Financial and Economic Inclusion (WYFEI) 2030, and the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AUC EVAWG), highlighting their roles in empowering African women and girls as agents of change.
Expected Outcomes:
● A gender-sensitive roadmap for advancing reparative justice in Africa.
● Strengthened collaboration among CSOs, international organizations, and AU bodies.
● Increased public awareness and advocacy for the intersection of gender and reparations.
